Behind the Science with Forensic Ornithologist Carla Dove and the Feather Identification Lab Past and Present

This month, Behind the Science is exploring the past, present, and future of the Feather Identification Lab at the National Museum of Natural History. Join us for a conversation with NMNH forensic ornithologist Carla Dove of the Smithsonian’s Feather Identification Lab and author Chris Sweeney, whose new book The Feather Detective: Mystery, Mayhem, and the Magnificent Life of Roxie Laybourne chronicles the remarkable woman who founded the lab and pioneered the field of forensic ornithology. In a discussion moderated by NMNH Chief Scientist Rebecca Johnson, Dove and Sweeney will explore Laybourne’s groundbreaking legacy, the science of identifying birds from the smallest traces, and the real-world mysteries solved through this unique discipline.

Copies of The Feather Detective: Mystery, Mayhem, and the Magnificent Life of Roxie Laybourne will be available for sale and signing before and after the program. Plus, check out some of Roxie’s notes and research items and see a feather identification demo with Feather Lab Staff.

Registration is encouraged. Space is filled on a first come first served basis.
