At the Vanguard: Making and Saving Poetry

Join us in uplifting the exhibition At the Vanguard: Making and Saving History at HBCUs as we explore its central themes together. Participants are invited to revel in the vibrant energy of HBCU life in science, literature, and the arts; and transform that spirit into poetry that commemorates the HBCU experience.

Led by international slam poetry champion Anthony McPherson, this workshop introduces the technique of call and response, a dynamic conversational form in which an initial statement, phrase, or melody (the “call”) is immediately followed by an answering phrase (the “response”).

Through interactive activities and a discussion with Museum Curator Tulani Salahu-Din, attendees will reflect on and preserve their own cultural understanding through poetic expression.
