A Day Unplugged

Join the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum for A Day Unplugged, a family-friendly program inviting guests to slow down, reconnect with nature, and celebrate the start of the growing season. Participants will learn the art of Creating the Perfect Container Garden, a hands-on workshop led by garden facilitator Derek Thomas, who will demonstrate how to grow vegetables, herbs, or ornamental plants in small spaces. Whether you have a balcony, porch, or windowsill or consider yourself “earth challenged”; this workshop will show how simple it can be to create a thriving container garden. Families can also enjoy story time for youth and a noon-day sound bath immersion designed to inspire reflection on the beauty of being and encourage personal and communal balance through mindful and sustainable practices. The day will also mark the kickoff of the 2026 FRESHFARM ACM Farm Stand season, bringing fresh, locally grown produce directly to the community in Ward 8. Join us Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 10 AM – 2 PM at the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum to unplug, connect with community, and celebrate the season of growth.
