A Tale of Three Chinatowns Documentary: Screening + Conversation

A Tale of Three Chinatowns (2021, 90 min) explores the survival of urban ethnic neighborhoods through the stories of three Chinatowns in Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Boston.

Featuring the voices of residents, community activists, developers, and government officials, the documentary examines the forces reshaping these communities and the challenges they face. Chicago’s Chinatown reflects a story of growth and expansion, while Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown has dwindled to a small residential population. Boston’s Chinatown sits between these extremes, as competing interests continue to shape its future.

Through these intersecting perspectives, the film offers a timely look at urban development and gentrification as experienced by those on the frontlines.
