Smithsonian Journeys - From Africa to Brazil: A Cultural Journey through Rio and Salvador

This immersive Smithsonian Journeys travel program offers a powerful exploration of Brazil’s Afro-Brazilian heritage through the vibrant cities of Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. From the historic streets of Little Africa and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Valongo Wharf to the colorful neighborhoods of Salvador, travelers walk in the footsteps of enslaved Africans whose resilience and cultural influence continue to shape Brazil’s identity today.

The program includes exclusive, hands-on experiences that will foster a deep connection with Afro-Brazilian culture. Travelers take part in samba and percussion workshops, join a cooking class inspired by traditional Afro-Brazilian cuisine, and visit a Carnival costume warehouse for a behind-the-scenes look at the world’s most iconic celebration. These experiences are complemented by meaningful engagement with local communities who preserve and share their culture through music, dance, religion, and storytelling.

Visits to scenic landmarks are also woven into the journey. Travelers ride a cogwheel train through lush rainforest to Christ the Redeemer, ascend Sugarloaf Mountain by cable car for panoramic views of Rio’s coastline, and explore the rich biodiversity of the Rio Botanical Gardens. Evenings are filled with local flavor and rhythm, including a sunset dinner in Rio’s artsy Santa Teresa district.

This program is a celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture: a rhythmic, artistic, and soulful journey through history, resistance, and joy. It offers participants a deeper understanding of Brazil’s past and present and a lasting connection to the people and stories that are defining its future.
