app.smartsheet.com…

Working with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (SI- NMAAHC) Robert Frederick Smith (RFS) Center for the Digitization and Curation of African American History, the Community Archiving Workshop provides experienced archivists the opportunity to serve the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor and work with local volunteers to help the First Shiloh Baptist Church of Buffalo, the Colored Musicians Club and Jazz Museum, and the WUFO/Black Radio History Collective gain intellectual and physical control over endangered historical collections. Museum professionals are paired with community members to conduct basic processing, cataloging and inspection of audio and video tapes and photographs to learn how to identify risk factors and make recommendations for preserving historical collections.

Workshop participants will gain experience in working with and training other community historians to care for their collections. In this guided process, they will engage in hands-on processing, inspecting, and cataloging both audiovisual and paper-based media. Most importantly, they will make it possible for these organizations to preserve their history for future generations.

This workshop is IN-PERSON ONLY and lunch will be provided.  A workshop schedule and volunteer packet will be provided after completing registration.

This one-day workshop will take place at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, Central Library, 1 Lafayette Square, Buffalo, NY 14203
Central Meeting Room, Second Floor
