Hometown Treasures: Capital Region (Day One)

A Free Two-Day Program in Potomac, Maryland

Hometown Treasures: Capital Region brings the National Museum of African American History and Culture into the community for two days of family history, cultural discovery, and hands-on preservation experiences.

The program takes place Friday, September 18, and Saturday, September 19, at the Bette Carol Thompson Scotland Neighborhood Recreation Center in Potomac, Maryland. Attend either day—or join us for both.

Please note: This event takes place in Potomac, Maryland, not at the museum in Washington, D.C.

Bring Your Family’s History to Light
Discover how to care for the photographs, documents, textiles, heirlooms, and keepsakes that hold your family’s stories. Both days feature Professional Reviews and a free Community Expo.

Professional Reviews

Meet one-on-one with a preservation specialist for a professional review of your family treasures and heirlooms. You’ll learn more about the historical significance of your items and receive practical guidance on caring for them for future generations.

Participants may bring up to three items for review. Past participants have brought photographs, letters, books, quilts, uniforms, dresses, textiles, ephemera, military memorabilia, family records, and other cherished keepsakes.

Community Expo
Free and open to all. No registration required.
Explore the living history of Scotland, Maryland, and connect with local cultural, historical, and heritage organizations. The Community Expo includes:

• DIY preservation workshops
• Art, quilting, oral history, and preservation demonstrations
• Family-friendly preservation activities
• Opportunities to explore community history and shared heritage

You do not need a Professional Review appointment to attend the Community Expo.
