Looking Closely: Identity and Belonging in Portraiture | Cultivating Learning

In this Cultivating Learning workshop, participants engage in close looking using the Unveiling Stories thinking routine to explore Shimomura Crossing the Delaware by Roger Shimomura. Through guided observation and discussion, educators examine how themes of identity, immigration, and personal experience shape the meaning of the work. The session connects art, biography, and history while encouraging thoughtful interpretation. Participants reflect on the question: what does it mean to be American?
