Nathaniel Hawthorne: Unpublished Fragments, Uncensored Imagination

Author and scholar Robert S. Levine draws from his most recent book, Nathaniel Hawthorne: Parables, Fantasies, Fragments, to discuss the little-known fragments from a series of unpublished notebooks from the 1830s and 1840s in which Hawthorne allowed his imagination to wander freely. Levine addresses Hawthorne’s early career as a writer, the later publication of his notebooks, and the fragments themselves to reveal a new, unfamiliar Hawthorne: a radical literary experimenter and a proto-modernist for today.
