Operation Dragoon, launched on August 15, 1944, was the second-largest amphibious assault in the European Theater, opening a southern front, securing Marseille and Toulon, and forcing a German retreat. Originally Operation Anvil, it sparked a sharp dispute between Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Historian Mitchell Yockelson recounts the campaign.
