Many of the chairs still in use today were designed in the 20th century—and have stood the test of time for their comfort, function, and striking visual presence. Art historian Jennie Hirsh explores the history of iconic modern chairs from around the world, tracing how designers including Elaine Gray, Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, and Charles and Ray Eames reimagined seating for a rapidly changing century.
