Urban Bird Habitat Garden

In this garden, native trees, shrubs, and perennials provide the essential ingredients for a successful urban bird habitat: food, water, shelter, and a place to raise young hatchlings.

Over 300 bird species have been identified in the District of Columbia. Some live here all year round, some stay seasonal, and others pass through on their annual migrations to their summer and winter homes.

A landscaped garden with yellow and flowers, foliage, a paved walkway, and a Smithsonian Gardens logo.
The many gardens that surround the Smithsonian are a “museum without walls.” All have been designed to complement the museums they border and to enhance the overall museum experience of learning, appreciation, and enjoyment.
