The California State Railroad Museum was established in 1981 and is operated by the State of California and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation. Part of the state park system, the museum interprets the role of railroads in connecting California to the rest of the nation. Exhibitions and programs focus on California and the history of the American West. Previous Smithsonian collaborations include traveling exhibitions.
